EMERGENCY SERVICES SECTOR REFORM UPDATE
Today the Minister for Emergency Services Tony Piccolo released the Emergency Sevices Sector Reform Discussion Paper. Those who attended one of the many consultation forums presented by the Minister will note that paper contains a good balance of points raised at the forums and stimulates and encourages further discussion.
The CFSVA will formally respond and in conjunction with Branch Presidents will work towards formulating a submission which encapsulate the views of CFS volunteers. CFS volunteers are encouraged to provide comment either through their Branch, CFSVA state office or individually.
It is important that you are involved in moulding the future of the emergency services in South Australia – as you, a CFS volunteer, are an important and integral part of South Australia’s Emergency Services.
The Discussion paper can also be accessed using the following link

Submission due by Friday 24th October 2014.
PERTH VISIT
Last week as part of Minister Piccolo’s delegation I travelled to Perth to meet with the Western Australian Department of Fire and Emergency Services.
Meetings were held with DFES, state associations and unions during which it was interesting to note the varying views presented by each of the groups. There certainly were some interesting aspects of the WA model that deserve further consideration, and also there were some lessons to be learnt. The views of the 2 volunteer fire associations were at odds, with one groups funded through DFES satisfied with the current model, whilst the bush fire association, representing 26,000 volunteers and funded through local Government, were critical of the WA model which they believed lacked consultation and failed to acknowledge the culture of volunteers. The clear message from the bush fire association was that volunteer culture and consultation are essential to any reform process and praised Minister Piccolo for the extensive consultation process he had undertaken.
